2013B * Notes

The history of the double printing.

In 2014 and 2016 the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, printed the same serial numbers on duplicate $1 bills.

In 2014, the Bureau of Engraving and Printing asked the Washington D.C. facility to print some star notes, and a little over a year later, they asked the Fort Worth facility to print the same notes again. They did not realize their mistake until the notes had been introduced into circulation.

The mistake was missed by almost everyone, and even the Bureau of Engraving and Printing only included the production numbers for the Fort Worth facility. They omitted the production numbers from Washington D.C. There was high speculation within the community that this error has occurred.

Mr. Winograd in his own words, “We found 2013 B* DC-printed notes in circulation in 2015. And as I said, this printing was never reported by BEP. But this was not the first time that BEP printed notes and did not report it. It was the report of the FW printing in June of 2016 Monthly Production Report that raised the red flags. And when the first 2013 B* FW-printed notes were spotted in circulation in January 2017, then we knew we are on to something BIG. Ed was the one who initiated the idea to create a project and contact as many collectors as we could, and this way facilitated identifying a matching pair. And it looks like we succeeded in this, as up to now there have been 11 matching pairs identified and verified, and we have over 18,000 notes identified and documented by collectors as of August 31 2021, and the first pair to go to auction sold for over $6,000.”

Mr. Karol Winograd, who ran the master list, and who updated the list with new notes, contacted matching note owners as a go-between to let them know that they have a part of a pair and to see if they want to auction them, sell them, trade them, etc., and this in a nutshell is the Zegers/Winograd project. Project 2013B.

Mr. Winograd has retired from coordinating the master list, and since this time, another team has picked up the daunting task of coordinating the master list. Enter Project 2013B. Located at www.project2013b.blogspot.com, Project 2013B has picked up the Zegers/Winograd project and continues to facilitate matches.
